Moving your boiler to a better spot? We’ve covered the details you need to consider

If you're contemplating shifting your boiler to a new spot within your home, it's important to be prepared for the associated costs. Whether you’re moving your boiler to make space, or you simply have a better place for it elsewhere in the home, find out just how much you can expect to pay. Read on for a full breakdown, or get an instant price online.

Moving your boiler: how much will it cost?

The cost of moving a boiler varies depending on several factors. On average, you can expect to pay between £700 and £1000 on top of your standard installation quote. However, if extensive pipework or flue work is required, the cost may rise. At Padly we offer a simple survey prior to quoting, so we can get a full understanding of what you’ll need and let you know upfront exactly how much your new boiler and boiler relocation will cost.

What factors impact the cost of moving a boiler?

Weight – If your boiler is heavier than average, engineers may charge a little more to cover the extra manpower required to move it. This is most common with oil boilers.

Extra pipework – This depends on how far you’re moving your new boiler away from its original location. The further the boiler is moved, the more pipework is required.

Flue installation – Moving your boiler also means installing a new flue, or switching from a horizontal flue that comes out of a wall, to a vertical vent that exits through the roof. This adds to the cost of your boiler installation and relocation.

Distance of the move - The further you wish to move your boiler, the more it will likely cost. Moving it to a different room or floor will involve more work and materials, thus increasing the price.

Complexity of the installation - If the new location requires significant alterations to the pipework or flue, or if additional components are needed, the complexity of the job will increase, impacting the overall cost.

Boiler type - The type of boiler you have can also affect the cost. Combi boilers, for instance, might be less expensive to move compared to system or regular boilers due to their compact size and lack of external water tanks.

Gas engineer's labour costs - Labour costs can vary depending on the gas engineer you choose, your location, and the duration of the job. It’s advisable to obtain multiple quotes to find a competitive price.

Where can my boiler be moved to?

The new location of your new boiler is, within reason, up to you! Combi boilers in particular are very flexible, so you have more options when it comes to relocation. However, depending on which type of boiler you choose, there may be a few limitations. We've detailed some common places you can relocate your boiler to in your home:

Kitchen - Moving your boiler to the kitchen can be a practical choice due to its typically central location. A popular decision is to move it to a kitchen cupboard so that its out of sight, while still being easily accessible for maintenance and repairs. Additionally, the heat generated by the boiler can help keep your kitchen warm during the colder months.

Airing cupboard - An airing cupboard is a popular choice for boiler relocations due to them typically being warm and dry. Moving your boiler here can help ensure efficient operation, prevent freezing during winter and keeps it out of sight while preserving valuable living space.

Loft -  The loft can be an ideal location to move your boiler to if you have limited space. This is because it will free up space in the main living areas, be completely out of sight and reduce the noise level. However, this option may require additional insulation and protection to prevent freezing during the winter months, as lofts can be cold and damp. Also, proper ventilation will be crucial to ensure safe operation.

Garage - Moving a boiler to the garage is another popular choice as it helps maintain a quiet and clutter-free home, while providing easy access for maintenance and repairs. However, during the winter your boiler will be more susceptible to freezing if it is in the garage. To prevent this, we recommend installing a boiler with frost protection.

Utility room - If you have a utility room, its an ideal location to move your boiler to due to its purpose-built design. It offers convenience for maintenance, a dedicated space for laundry-related tasks and helps to save space elsewhere in your home. Before relocating your boiler here, ensure that there is enough space and that it has the necessary support for hot water.

Bedroom - While less common, you may want to move your boiler to a bedroom for easy access and to take advantage of available space. It can provide a source of warmth during colder nights, but it's crucial to ensure proper noise insulation and safety precautions to maintain a peaceful sleeping environment.

Additional Considerations

Building Regulations:

When moving a boiler, adherence to building regulations is crucial. A Gas Safe registered engineer will ensure that the installation complies with all relevant regulations, including flue positioning and ventilation.

Energy Efficiency:

A boiler relocation offers an opportunity to improve your home’s energy efficiency. Consider optimizing the insulation of pipes in the new location and ensuring the new spot is conducive to efficient boiler operation.
